It depends on the brand. Some gift cards can be used both on a brand's website and in its physical shops, while others are limited to online use only. The terms shown with the card tell you where it can be spent, so it is worth checking before you buy if the recipient prefers one or the other.
For a card that works in stores, the recipient usually shows or enters the code at the till in the way the shop supports. For online only cards, redemption happens at the brand's web checkout, and taking such a card into a shop would not work.
If where the card can be used matters for your gift, confirm it before purchase so the recipient is not caught out. Matching the card to how the person actually likes to shop makes the difference between a gift they use easily and one that sits unredeemed.
