To redeem a card you mainly need the card code, and sometimes an accompanying PIN or security number, depending on the brand. These are provided with the card when it is issued, and keeping them together and private is what lets you spend the value smoothly.
At the brand's checkout you enter the code, and the PIN if one is required, into the gift card or voucher box, then apply it to your purchase. Entering the details exactly as shown matters, since the codes are sensitive to case and characters.
